Cornish cheap energy wind farm to undergo modification - 02/08/2010

The UK's first commercial cheap energy wind farm in Cornwall is undergoing modification, it has been announced.

The Delabole wind farm's four turbines will be taken down and replaced with fewer but larger versions, which will more than double the current output to supply nearly 8,000 homes with electricity.

Measuring 64 metres to the hub and 99.5 metres to the tip, the new turbines are expected to harness wind energy much more efficiently.

It is estimated that the project will cost energy suppliers Good Energy £12 million and help Cornwall meet its renewable energy targets.

The county aims to achieve a 20 per cent reduction in its greenhouse gasses by 2015; a 40 per cent reduction by 2020 and be completely energy self-sufficient by 2025.

Juliet Davenport, founder of Good Energy, told BBC News: "By increasing its capacity we can contribute to Cornwall's renewable energy targets [and] increase price stability for Good Energy's own electricity supply business."
