Draught proofing 'cheapest way of improving a home' - 22/08/2011

Consumers wanting to compare energy prices and switch gas providers might be able to save more money on their fuel bills by improving the energy efficiency of their home.

Andrew Leech, director of the National Home Improvement Council, explained that the most effective and cost efficient way of improving a home is by draught proofing it.

"The cheapest way of insulating your home and improving energy efficiency is to cut out the draught," he noted.

"I would think [about installing] loft insulation and also cavity wall insulation - if you've got cavity walls, it can repay itself within three to four years and make energy savings from your energy bills, so it is worth considering."

Mr Leech's advice came after npower became the fifth of the Big Six energy suppliers to hike its prices, with electricity costs set to go up by 7.2 per cent and gas by 15.7 per cent.
