One of the smaller energy suppliers in the market has teamed up with another housing association to offer tenants cheap gas and cheap electricity deals.
Ebico, a not-for-profit energy supplier, will offer residents of LHA-ASRA housing group in London and the East Midlands a flat rate gas and electricity tariff that does not require users to pay a standing charge.
This could help a significant number of people, as the supplier cited figures suggesting 21 per cent of East Midlands households and 13 per cent of London-based individuals are already in fuel poverty.
Phil Levermore, managing director of Ebico, commented: "People on pre-payment meters generally get a raw deal from energy suppliers.
"We have made the system fairer by charging all customers the same rate regardless of their payment method and eliminating the standing charge. We hope, in time, that all suppliers will follow our lead in doing this," he added.
Ebico has in the past joined forces with Sanctuary Housing in the Midlands and Moorlands Housing in Staffordshire.
