EDF Energy considering nuclear funding support - 01/08/2012
Energy supplier EDF Energy has announced it is considering seeking more partners to share the costs of building new nuclear plants.
The French company has appointed a financial adviser to consider its options for funding the UK sites, the Daily Telegraph reports.
Two nuclear plants are planned for Hinkley Point in Somerset, while a further two will be constructed in Sizewell, Suffolk.
However, the initial estimated cost for the development of the reactors is now thought to have spiralled to £7.5 billion and EDF Energy may need support meeting this expense.
Chief financial officer at EDF Thomas Piquemal said: "Our goal has always been and remains to be in control of the operations [and] to control the projects, but this does not mean that we absolutely need to control 80 per cent of the projects."
The news comes after EDF Energy recently topped Consumer Focus' latest quarterly index as the supplier with the most customer complaints.
