Govt plans 'could require home renovations' - 06/02/2012
Individuals who replace a broken boiler could find they are required to perform several other renovations that may help them get cheap electricity and improve their energy efficiency.
Under new government proposals, people making a range of home improvements, such as installing a new boiler or performing a loft conversion, may have to install energy-saving measures worth up to ten per cent of the cost of the work, the Daily Telegraph reports.
The publication noted while the government acknowledges replacing a boiler may be a "distress purchase" made out of necessity, it is keen to encourage householders to use this as an opportunity to lower their carbon footprint and cut heating costs.
Such upgrades could be carried out under the Green Deal, which is intended to encourage people to fit energy efficiency measures and will come into effect later this year.
However, concerns have been raised it may not stimulate the take-up of insulation as much as hoped.
