Energy comparison customers should be assured that the government's Green Deal will work towards offsetting any price hikes that energy suppliers implement, the energy secretary has said.
Speaking after ScottishPower revealed a 19 per cent increase in the cost of its gas supply, Chris Huhne commented that the news would be "disappointing" for millions of the energy supplier's customers.
"But it underlines why the government is building an escape route from a high fossil fuel future," he pointed out.
"The Green Deal will help householders upgrade their homes to waste less energy, and our electricity market reforms will bring on investment in clean energy sources that are not vulnerable to global price shocks."
The minister added that the UK needs to get off the "oil hook" and instead look to renewable energy for "clean, green growth".
Meanwhile, Labour MP Meg Hillier has blamed prime minister David Cameron for failing to take action to curb "excessive rises" in the cost of energy.
