The next price hike from a member of the Big Six energy suppliers could come sooner rather than later as the chair of Centrica has warned householders to brace themselves.
Sir Roger Carr, who heads British Gas' parent company, told the Sunday Telegraph that energy cost increases, such as the inflation-busting ones announced by ScottishPower last week, are "inevitable".
"Moving wholesale prices have been very material, well over 20 per cent, in recent months," he noted.
"In those circumstances, it is just a commercial fact that those things convert into price increases. It's high. Nobody likes higher prices but it's passing on costs which nobody can avoid."
Sir Roger did not comment on whether a similar announcement from Centrica would be forthcoming but explained that domestic energy users should not be surprised if their bills increase, particularly as funds for decarbonising the UK's energy generation system have to be recouped from somewhere.
