Consumer Focus criticises 'paltry' reductions from energy suppliers - 04/03/2009
Consumer Focus has criticised what it calls the "paltry" price reductions designed to offer cheap energy rates to customers after a freezing winter.
Scottish Power has become the latest major supplier to announce cost reductions, with the company set to lower gas prices by 7.5 per cent and electricity by three per cent.
However, Consumer Focus says that the reductions account for little considering the scale of price rises throughout the course of 2008.
Robert Hammond, of Consumer Focus, said: "All this does is put Scottish Power back in the pack with the rest of the big six who are passing on paltry reductions to their customers at the end of the winter."
Energy suppliers blamed wholesale market volatility for price rises last year and these same fluctuations in figures are responsible for the limited reductions being announced at the moment.
The UK has one of the smallest gas storage facilities in Europe and as a result remains more exposed to increasing prices.
