New bill format makes it easier for consumers to compare energy providers - 05/07/2010

The new changes to energy bills will make it easier for consumers to compare energy providers, according to Consumer Focus.

The organisation pointed out that the new annual statement that summarises energy consumption will allow customers to make more informed decisions and save money.

From the start of July, energy suppliers are obliged to send their customers bills which explain more clearly how much energy they have used and break down usage costs.

Hannah Mummery, senior policy advocate for energy at Consumer Focus, said the new regulations make up for the previous lack of transparency that often left people unaware of the cheaper tariffs on the market.

"We understand that there have been problems before where people have been unsure which supplier they are with," she said.

"Energy suppliers have committed recently to making sure that if there are any problems, they will sort them out amongst themselves."

A recent Ofgem report found that customers are still unhappy about certain aspects of the way energy suppliers handle complaints.
