UK sees 25% of homes 'facing fuel poverty' - 05/12/2011

More and more people may be keen to find a cheap electricity supplier following news fuel poverty now affects a quarter of homes in the UK.

Commenting on new figures from Consumer Focus, head of business and environment at Unison Mike Jeram claimed 25 per cent of household are "being forced to make the choice between heating and eating".

He noted how the National Office of Statistics reported 25,700 deaths related to fuel poverty in 2010/11.

The expert claimed this figure is "shameful" and only likely to rise as people struggle with the recent price hikes introduced by the big energy companies.

"Public sector workers facing pay freezes and job cuts cannot cope with these rising fuel prices," Mr Jeram remarked.

A spokesperson for Energy Action Scotland recently claimed the number of families facing fuel poverty in Scotland is higher than first thought, at nearly 100,000, the BBC reported.
