Homeowners in Liverpool could be able to get cheap gas and electricity if a new trial taking place in the city is successful.
As part of a three-year experiment, a range of hi-tech energy efficiency measures including solar slates, wall insulation and triple-glazed windows will be fitted to a property owned by Riverside Homes, the local Echo publication said.
The results of this will be compared with a home fitted out to conventional standards.
It is expected the eco-friendly property will reduce its bills by around 60 per cent, while carbon emissions will be slashed by 84 per cent.
If successful, the scheme could be rolled out to 50,000 of Riverside's homes around the UK.
However, assistant property services director at the firm Mark Burnett said: "The eco-features alone will not reduce energy bills. People have to change the way they use their home."
Advisers from the company will be on hand to explain to the participating families what they can do to best manage their property.
It was recently noted by TV presenter Julia Kendall that one way to improve a home's efficiency is to fit a more modern central heating system.
