Industry tax 'will raise gas bills' - 04/05/2011

Domestic energy users may wish to switch gas tariffs in light of comments made by an industry body about new taxes.

According to the Independent, Oil & Gas UK has argued against a proposed 12 per cent duty levied on oil and gas production, saying it could dissuade energy suppliers from investing in Britain's gas fields.

Mike Tholen, economics director of the body, noted that gas from around Britain is one of the cheapest supply sources for the country as it is in close proximity.

He added: "If those sources are going to be less productive and there is less investment to renew those supplies then it makes this cheaper gas less available. Consumers will then pay more."

Meanwhile, British Gas owner Centrica has threatened to pull out of the UK's gas fields because of the new tax.
