Scottish government pledges to pursue cheap energy and create more jobs - 03/02/2009

The Scottish government has pledged to pursue energy efficiency to provide better access to cheap energy and also to create more green jobs.

John Swinney, the cabinet secretary for finance and sustainable growth, said that the government would strive to develop more renewable energy technology and sought to create up to 16,000 additional jobs in the green sector.

He added that cheap energy prices would continue to be pursued through more widespread domestic efficiency.

Mr Swinney told an RSPB conference on Scotland's Natural Wealth: "We have a much greater share of the UK's natural green energy potential - in wave, wind and water - and we want to see that figure go even higher."

Expanding the green sector is viewed as one way to revitalise the ailing economy in the coming years.

The secretary added that the Scottish government would work with a range of different organisations in order to achieve the goals.

Wind turbines are one of the highest-profile forms of renewable energy but have proven controversial when built onshore given their striking appearance.
