Report: High prices from energy suppliers reduces disposable income - 17/12/2009

A lack of cheap energy rates available from energy suppliers is partly responsible for many office workers finding their disposable income reduced during 2009, new research suggests.

According to the Bank of England report, around 30 per cent of UK office workers have found their disposable income has dropped by at least £100 a month over the course of the last year, with high energy prices partly to blame.

All the major energy companies introduced dramatic price rises towards the end of last year in response to a spike in the wholesale market and although wholesale costs have since fallen, energy firms have been criticised for failing to lower their prices as quickly.

This year has been characterised by a series of marginal price reductions primarily to online tariffs as energy suppliers have competed for the title of cheapest supplier.

Domestic energy rates could be reduced through the installation of cavity wall and loft insulation, while getting energy-efficient boilers and white goods can also help.
