New regulations 'will improve' the UK's energy efficiency - 06/03/2012

New regulations that will mandate efficiency standards for rental properties may help ensure more individuals are able to get cheap energy in the coming years.

The British Property Federation (BPF) noted the industry is working hard to meet the targets, which will ban the letting of all residential and commercial properties with an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) rating of F or G as of 2018.

Chief executive of the organisation Liz Peace said the industry will have to adapt, as sustainability is set to become a major issue in the future.

She said: "The property industry is doing a great deal despite the economic downturn to put its house in order. But it needs clarity from government as to exactly when F and G rated properties will be unlettable."

Recently, director of property (real estate) at the BPF Ian Fletcher warned landlords that even though 2018 seems like a long way off, they need to start thinking about measures to improve their EPC rating now.
