Energy suppliers could face a challenge in the form of small-scale energy generating projects.
Less than 0.5 per cent of Britain's cheap electricity is supplied from sources other than the Big Six utility companies, but smaller, independent suppliers are increasingly being backed in their quest to purchase in the wholesale energy markets.
Recommendations from industry watchdog Ofgem, such as a range of measures to put pressure on the main energy companies, plus a boom in the number of householders generating their own green electricity, are seeing a slow "shift to specialists", Reuters reports.
However, Jigar Shah, founder of retail solar energy supplier SunEdison, told the news agency that the move towards small-scale renewable energy generation could force power companies to raise their prices to service fixed costs with a smaller revenue base.
