More choice 'needed' for cheap energy supplies - 23/09/2009

There is a need for more choice over who supplies domestic energy in order to ensure cheap energy deals are available, it has been claimed.

Following the release of statements from the country's six largest energy suppliers to Ofgem stating that prices will not be reduced, energy campaigner at Which? Clare Corbett said there is a need for transparency and choice in the market.

"We don't know how well each supplier manages its wholesale costs, we don't even know what wholesale prices these suppliers face. We need transparency over these wholesale prices. Moreover, we need genuine choice," said Ms Corbett.

She also raised questions over how competitive the market rally is and what action Ofgem can take to ensure fair competition within the market.

The statements from Britain's big six energy suppliers followed a letter from chief executive of Ofgem Alistair Buchanan telling them that they owe it to consumers to explain the effect falling wholesale costs will have on energy bills.
