Cheap energy buildings could reduce prices and emissions - 24/09/2009

Homeowners looking to compare energy prices may be interested to hear the UK Green Building Council (UK-GBC) has called for new environmental measures.

The organisation says the impact of inefficient building techniques has failed to get the attention it deserves in previous years and it wants new measures to be included in this year's environmental summit in Copenhagen.

Inefficient housing produces around half of the UK's greenhouse gases, but the UK-GBC says issues such as deforestation and energy generation tend to dominate the global agenda.

Paul King, chief executive of the UK-GBC, said: "There is no bigger, more cost-effective option for achieving the global cuts in carbon emissions than our buildings over the next few years."

He added that discussing the issue more thoroughly in Copenhagen could help bring about major change.

Measures such as installing cavity wall and loft insulation, as well as using more efficient white goods such as washing machines and fridges, could help reduce the impact of prices from energy suppliers and lower emissions.
