One politician in Scotland has urged gas and electricity suppliers to put safeguards in place so customers can be warned when something is wrong with their energy bill.
Scottish National Party MSP Maureen Watt said there needs to be a system that alerts consumers if they are set to receive an unusually high or low bill so this can be investigated.
She said incorrect billing can cause great distress for individuals and so efforts must be made to avoid this.
She added: "If a vulnerable individual was overcharged, they may not have the knowledge or confidence to ensure it is swiftly rectified. Instead they may unnecessarily suffer in silence."
Recently, EDF Energy was one supplier to announce improvements to its billing system following a rise in complaints from customers.
