British Gas

British Gas are the largest provider of gas and electricity in the UK with about 11 million gas customers and 5 million electricity customers (source: British Gas April 2007). They are known as Scottish Gas in Scotland and Nwy Prydain in Wales.

British Gas Service Rating

British Gas has been rated 3 stars out of 5, or average, by energyhelpline.com. If you have had problems with British Gas, you can compare their prices and service levels with all other UK suppliers with energyhelpline.com.

They have been given by us a 3 star service rating as they have a 24x7 call centre and excellent services to pay bills and submit meter reads online; however they also had the highest level of customer complaints in the industry in 2006 (source: energywatch) with 3 times the level of complaints than their nearest competitor. In 2007, they are putting much more investment into their customer services to attempt to turn these problems around.

British Gas offer a standard tariff and a number of online tariffs - the cheapest one being Click Energy 3. Click Energy 3 includes both lump sum discounts and discounted rates. Any customer switching to a British Gas online tariff should be aware that they will no longer receive a paper bill. The Click Energy 3 tariff is however specially designed so that customers can do as much a possible over the internet. British Gas Boiler and Central Heating Service Plans 

British Gas also offer boiler and central heating service plans. This is often known as British Gas 3 star cover. This contract is entirely separate from your gas and electricity supply and is not dependent on you being a British Gas customer for energy. If you choose to switch away from British Gas for your energy, the service will continue and be completely unaffected.
