Pub licensee hit with 97% higher gas bill - 26/05/2011

Business energy customers might be tempted to switch gas deals when they are hit with high bills.

Pub licensee Joe Cussens was almost put on a rolling contract by British Gas, but challenged the energy supplier when he became aware that the new tariff would be 97 per cent more expensive than his existing contract.

He told the Morning Advertiser that his April gas bill would rise from £291 to £573 if he agreed to the renewal supply contract.

Mr Cussens then spoke to British Gas and was offered a slightly lower rate - but still 48 per cent higher than his previous bills.

"I've since shopped around and found a supplier that can limit my new price rise to 'just' 45 per cent. I know wholesale energy prices have increased, but I'm shocked that I'll be paying around 45 per cent more for my gas. That's a hell of a rise in anyone's language," he told the publication.

Businesses could take a leaf out of Mr Cussens' book and carry out an energy comparison.
