Energy supplier price reduction criticised - 03/03/2009

Scottish Power's price reduction could convince some homeowners to switch energy companies but the cut has been criticised by some industry experts, reports the Herald.

The energy company will reduce average electricity prices by three per cent and gas by 7.5 per cent from the end of March, but critics have pointed out this is relatively minor considering the scale of last year's price rises.

Gas prices from Scottish Power increased by 15 per cent in February 2008 and then again by nearly 35 per cent in the late summer.

Mark Todd, director at energyhelpline, told the paper: "The prices cuts across the suppliers have been disappointing and with wholesale prices continuing to fall, and the recession deepening, we hope for more price cuts in late summer."

He added that price reductions were now expected from npower, the only major energy company yet to reduce its prices since the beginning of the year.

Energy suppliers blamed increasing wholesale prices for a series of rises throughout 2008.
