An upcoming fuel poverty bill designed to tackle price rises from energy suppliers has gained the support of a parliamentary candidate in Welwyn Hatfield in Hertfordshire.
The Welwyn and Hatfield Times reports that Paul Zukowskyj, a parliamentary candidate in the region for the Liberal Democrats, has pointed to the bill as a way of reducing fuel poverty.
New figures from Consumer Focus have revealed that over 14 per cent of households in the Welwyn Hatfield borough are struggling with fuel bills and the proposed bill will help provide insulation to combat the problem.
Mr Zukowskyj told the paper: "Prices being paid by energy companies for fuel on the wholesale markets are coming down, but the companies aren't passing on cuts to customers."
He added that electricity and gas prices have doubled over the course of the past five years.
The Energy Retail Association said £4 billion will be spent on energy-saving technology and other cost-reducing measures over the next three years.
Npower has become the last of the UK's major suppliers to announce a price reduction.
