Pensioners earning middle incomes have responded to the lack of cheap energy dramatically in recent years by cutting their energy use by the highest figures.
A study from the Institute for Fiscal Studies has revealed that between 2004 and 2007 this section of society reduced its energy spending by 12 per cent in response to price rises, while most people lowered their spending from their early 60s.
Older homeowners faced electricity price hikes of 36 per cent and gas price increases of 55 per cent over this period of time.
Maxine Frerk, of energy industry regulator Ofgem, told the BBC: "In these tough economic times it is more important than ever that energy suppliers do all they can to help customers who are struggling to pay their bills."
The Energy Retail Association, which represents energy companies in the UK, said suppliers offer a range of measures and assistance to help vulnerable customers through the winter months.
Energy companies sent out millions of energy-saving light bulbs earlier this year to help homeowners reduce their expenditure.
