The UK's cheap energy from renewable sources targets need to be more ambitious, the Centre for Alternative Technology has stated.
Alex Randall, spokesman for the organisation, commented: "The UK has a clear ethical responsibility to act quickly in order to play our part in preventing climate change, the effects of which will mostly be felt by poorer countries that have contributed the least to global carbon emissions."
He noted the centre's research has indicated that the UK could be entirely powered by green energy from renewable sources by 2030, so the government's failure to meet its own less ambitious targets "is disappointing".
Mr Randall's comments come after the Public Accounts Committee revealed the Department for Energy and Climate Change will have to employ "a greater sense of urgency and purpose" if Britain is going to achieve its 2020 target.
The spokesman also pointed out that reducing cheap gas and electricity usage will help cut carbon emissions.
