Renewable energy 'needs long-term planning' - 22/02/2011
There are many uncertainties surrounding the long-term future of offshore wind energy, energy comparison customers might be intrigued to hear.
This is the view put forward by Mike Childs, head of the climate change campaign at Friends of the Earth, who pointed out that the government has yet to decide how to fund renewable energy and how to "de-risk" the industry to make way for other investors.
"Marine renewables, and offshore in particular, could supply more than half of the UK's total energy requirements in 20 years' time if the UK decided that is the path we wanted to follow. But it hasn't been clear at all in terms of what our energy [usage] should be beyond 2020," he noted.
This leaves "uncertainty" for prospective investors in infrastructure, Mr Childs said, adding that this "takes many years to get built and needs to run for many years after".
