Draughty homes blamed for rise in carbon emissions - 01/04/2011
As a result of householders heating their homes with more cheap gas during the cold winter months, last year saw increased greenhouse gas emissions.
According to data supplied by the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the total amount of emissions emitted in the UK was up by an estimated 2.8 per cent on 2009's levels.
Carbon dioxide accounted for 84 per cent of all emissions in 2009 and is thought to have increased last year, although the true figures are not yet available.
Energy secretary Chris Huhne pointed to "inefficient and draughty homes" that let out heat and so have to be powered with more energy to be kept warm.
"[This] is why we want to help people waste less energy through the green deal and install new cleaner technologies to heat their homes," the minister said.
"As we come out of recession the coalition's determined to reduce our reliance on fossil fuels. That's why we are pushing on all fronts to turn around Britain's woeful record on renewables."
