95% of landlords are waiting for energy hikes - 05/07/2011

Rental tenants might want to compare energy now and switch gas tariffs if they find a cheaper deal.

According to research from Power Efficiency, 95 per cent of landlords believe their tenants will be hit by rising energy prices in the next few years, with nine in ten thinking that current wholesale energy rates will be a significant contributor to future hikes.

Mark Callaway, director of energy markets at the carbon strategy consultancy, commented: "There is no question that wholesale energy prices are going to continue to rise.

"There is little that tenants or landlords can do about it, other than try to procure the best contract energy deals and cut energy consumption," he pointed out.

This could include landlords educating their tenants about how to cut energy wastage in the home and making their rental properties more energy efficient.

Meanwhile, BBC business editor Robert Peston has posited that British Gas will increase its gas and electricity prices before the end of July.
