Derby tenants offered help with energy saving - 05/10/2011

Council tenants in Derby who may be looking to switch gas suppliers in order to get cheap energy may be able to benefit from a new funding scheme.

Thousands of families in the area are set to be helped by a £6.6 million joint scheme by Derby City Council and energy supplier E.ON to fit measures to make homes more efficient.

It is estimated an average property could see savings of more then £600 per year on gas bills due to renovations such as insulation, new heating systems and green measures such as solar panels.

Community energy saving programme manager at E.ON Jon Kirby stated: "This is a great example of councils, communities and companies getting together to help people lower their bills and reduce their effect on the planet."

Tenants in council properties will receive the upgrades free of charge, although private homeowners can still benefit from reduced costs for similar energy efficiency measures.

Recently, the National Association of Estate Agents noted investing in improvements such as draughtproofing is a good way to reduce heating bills for a small cost.
