NEA welcomes new energy tariff proposals - 12/04/2012

It may soon be easier for people to compare energy tariffs and switch gas or electricity suppliers.

Proposals have been put forward that will mean the Big Six energy companies - British Gas, E.ON, npower, Scottish and Southern Energy, EDF Energy and Scottish Power - have to contact their customers at least once a year to inform them of the best available deals in a bid to lower bills.

Director of external affairs at National Energy Action (NEA) Maria Wardrobe welcomed the plans, as they will "simplify the confusing and complex range of tariffs".

Furthermore, the proposals could help gas and electricity suppliers identify the households that are eligible for the Broader Group of Warm Home Discount.

However, Ms Wardrobe noted just because people are advised of alternative and cheaper tariffs, it does not necessarily mean they will be able to access them - an issue that needs to be addressed.

"For example, older vulnerable people with no access to the internet will not be in a position to switch to online direct debit," the expert noted.
