The Labour party's shadow energy and climate change secretary has raised concerns about the high cost of energy to vulnerable people.
Speaking on a visit to Newtown last week, Caroline Flint said these expenses are contributing to a "crisis" in the cost of living for millions of residents in the UK, Get Reading reports.
She called for steps to be taken by energy suppliers to ensure all over-75s are on the cheapest available tariff and the Energy Company Obligation is used to help vulnerable people out of fuel poverty by improving efficiency measures.
"Labour believes that help for people in fuel poverty should be targeted where it is most needed and does most good," Ms Flint said.
Recently, it was revealed by the Money Advice Trust the number of people seeking help with fuel debts has soared over the last few years, rising from 2.7 per cent of calls in 2004 to 13.7 per cent last year.
