Small business energy clients have been warned that they could face huge and unexpected utilities bills as a result of energy suppliers' miscalculations.
Consumer Focus has advised companies to follow its advice and reduce the likelihood of being caught out by expensive energy bills.
The Telegraph reports that the consumer group suggested small firms register with their energy supplier as soon as they move into new premises and check to see whether there are multiple meters for both gas and electricity.
Supplying energy companies with the correct meter reading every time a bill comes through will also stop the wrong readings being registered, while alerting the provider to a particularly small bill will help sort out potential problems early on.
The lobby group also suggested trying to negotiate repayments according to a manageable timescale if businesses do get hit by large bills, while if the case cannot be resolved, firms can always contact the Energy Ombudsman.
