Residents oppose cheap energy waste plant - 03/04/2009
Residents in Middlewich, Cheshire, some of whom may have decided to compare energy companies' prices, are opposing an energy-from-waste (EfW) plant in their area.
The Middlewich Guardian reports that development firm Covanta plans to build a facility which will provide electricity for 50,000 homes.
The plant would burn 370,000 tonnes of waste every year, but local residents are concerned about potential health risks and traffic congestion.
Locals have formed Chain, an organisation intent on campaigning against the proposal by collecting 5,000 signatures for a petition and lodging a formal complaint.
Brian Cartwright, chairman of Chain, told the paper: "The message to Covanta, in the UK and their head office in New Jersey, is already clear. It is that the people of Middlewich and the surrounding areas definitely do not want a giant incinerator in their midst."
Covanta said it welcomes debate on the matter and added that a majority of 300 local residents who attended an exhibition on the matter last year had approved the technology.
