Cheap energy advocated in Scottish schools - 01/07/2009

A number of schools in Scotland is looking to spread the word of cheap energy bills by becoming the first in the country to test out new energy meters.

The meters are designed to show exactly how much gas, water and electricity each school is using and as well as helping deliver cheap energy bills, teachers are hoping they can be used to demonstrate to pupils how to cut energy bills in general.

Kenmore, Longforgan, Stanley and the Royal School of Dunkeld primary schools in Perthshire have become the first in the country to pilot the devices, which have been created by eco energy technology company Ewgeco.

Anne Burrell, head of Kenmore primary school said the arrival of the new devices would not only help to cut the school's energy bills, but could also be used to promote energy efficiency among the children, as well as getting them interested in environmentally-friendly businesses.

"It has given the children an insight into the world of enterprise and innovation as they have followed the design process throughout the past year," she explained.

Earlier this month, it was reported that a school in Cornwall had installed a wind turbine in its grounds, in a move that could help it pursue cheap energy rates.
