Record number of homes install cheap energy solar panels - 01/09/2010

A record number of households installed cheap energy solar panels in August, new figures reveal.

According to energy regulator Ofgem, solar panels were installed in 2,257 homes in August - up from 1,700 in July and 1,400 in June, reports the BBC.

Overall, more than 6,688 have been installed since April, when the government altered its scheme which rewards people who generate their own energy to allow homeowners to receive 41.3p for every unit they produce.

After the panels are installed, the tariff is paid for 25 years and increases in line with the level of inflation.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, solar panels usually cost between £6,000 to £12,000 to buy and install depending on their size and are usually fitted by homeowners.

The panels have the ability to generate about £700 a year from the feed-in tariff, as well as saving homeowners around £100 a year on bills from energy suppliers.
