University of St Andrews 'to produce own cheap energy' - 06/06/2011

The University of St Andrews is to produce its own cheap electricity if plans for a wind farm are approved by councillors.

It unveiled proposals to install six wind turbines at Kenly Farm, near Boarhills, after the rising cost of energy saw its bills increase to £5.4 million a year.

"This increase in costs is equivalent to the salaries of up to 120 full-time staff at St Andrews and is a major financial risk for us," explained Derek Watson, quaestor and factor at the institution.

"Doing nothing is not an option. We would prefer to determine our own financial fate, than have it determined for us by the vagaries of international energy markets. Our consumption is on a flat line but we are being charged more and more for it."

Fife Council has received the planning application and is expected to make a decision on the plans later this year.
