At a time when domestic energy users are concerned that the Big Six energy suppliers will all put up their rates, the head of Centrica has called for an "honest and transparent" debate about the future of the UK's energy needs.
Sam Laidlaw, chief executive of British Gas' parent company, told delegates at an Economist energy summit: "We are rapidly approaching a tipping point in the energy story of this country and there is a risk that society is not being realistic about the path ahead."
He pointed out that Britain is becoming increasingly more dependent on the volatile world energy markets but is committed to cutting its carbon emissions, so a balance must be found that includes shielding householders from the soaring costs of gas and electricity.
"The clock is ticking," the expert insisted. "We as a nation have got one year in which to take action, or our carbon reduction targets may have to be sacrificed in the interests of safeguarding the security of our energy supplies."
