Small companies looking to switch their business energy supplier might want to take advantage of a new fair billing commitment launched by British Gas.
The supplier has pledged to deliver a charter to small firms, outlining ways in which they can be more energy efficient and advising on how to check they are being billed correctly.
It is also looking to bring down the maximum period in which it can back bill small business customers, with a three-year limit being introduced in 2012 that will drop to two years in 2013 and to 12 months the following year.
However, this is on condition of British Gas or industry processes being at fault and is dependent on the firm abiding by the Consumer Focus principles laid out to avoid the need for back billing.
These include supplying regular meter readings and contacting the supplier as soon as possible if the business either receives a big bill or believes it is paying too little.
Managing director of British Gas Business Kanat Emiroglu said the company understands the "concern and frustration that billing inaccuracies can cause" for customers.
