Homeowners looking to switch gas suppliers to get cheap gas bills could improve the energy efficiency of their abode, as this will also boost the value of the property.
Gordon Miller, co-founder and sustainability and communications director of Sustain Worldwide, stated property buyers are increasingly taking the efficiency of a house into account before they decide whether or not to buy it.
He predicted these residences will soon be seen as having a "value premium" among people looking to move into a new home.
"Two factors are coming into play here: rising energy costs are hugely impacting householders - especially as a cold winter is forecast - and the economic downturn begins to bite ever harder for many of us," said Mr Miller.
He was commenting shortly after calls from Savills for the Department of Energy and Climate Change to reassure the market following the recent feed-in tariff changes.
Mr Miller added the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors has recently advised those purchasing a home to look into the sustainability of a property before deciding to buy it.
