Wind power 'hindering' drive to green energy - 09/01/2012
Individuals who are looking to switch energy suppliers to a firm using green power sources may be interested in a new report that has criticised the use of wind power.
The study, by social policy think tank Civitas, claimed the use of the technology may lead to Brits paying more for their electricity as fossil fuel sources are still required as a back-up.
It stated: "Wind power is unreliable and requires conventional back-up generating capacity when wind speeds are, for example, very low or rapidly varying."
The report, by economist Ruth Lea, stated the most cost-efficient method of generating electricity in the short-term is gas-fired power stations, while nuclear plants are the cheapest medium-term option.
However, investment in renewable energy sources such as wind is said to be growing, as Scottish and Southern Energy noted last week it is now generating more than 1GW of power from onshore wind farms.
