Deadline for FIT changes passes - 02/04/2012

Individuals looking to get cheap electricity from green sources will receive less money from any solar installations fitted from this month, as the deadline for higher rates has now passed.

As of yesterday (April 1st), the amount paid in Feed-in Tariffs (FITs) for new small-scale photovoltaic arrays dropped from 43p/kWh to 21p/kWh.

The move was initially intended to come into effect from December 12th last year, but the deadline was pushed back after a legal challenge resulted in the original proposal being declared unlawful by the High Court, as it would have seen the decrease implemented before the end of a consultation period.

Energy and climate change minister Greg Barker said: "These changes will help improve the Feed-in Tariffs scheme, ensuring it is a scheme for the many and not for the few."

He added more studies are taking place to explore how the FIT initiative can be further advanced to encourage the small-scale renewable energy industry in the UK.
