Awareness in the home 'can help cut energy bills' - 04/04/2012

The search for cheap electricity bills can be solved by simple actions around the house, it has been suggested.

People could save up to £100 on their energy costs by being more aware of the appliances they use, according to Sustain Worldwide co-founder Gordon Miller.

Mr Miller said that small actions, such as turning off TVs at the wall and fitting low-energy light bulbs - which use around a quarter of the energy of older style bulbs - could make a big difference to your final energy bill.

He said: "Kettles … are big electricity users - 20p an hour if it was to be boiled continuously - so only fill it with enough water needed and don't boil it and walk away and then boil it again a minute later."

His comments come after communities minister Andrew Stunell announced a new-look energy performance certificate, which aims to give homeowners clearer information about the energy efficiency of their new homes.
