New solar rules 'will boost consumer confidence' - 28/05/2012

Individuals looking to secure cheap electricity by installing solar panels may be given the confidence to invest in the area thanks to updated rules from the government.

Last week, the Department of Energy and Climate Change set out its strategy for the sector, which will see a clear timetable brought in for future reductions in subsidies.

This was welcomed by Audrey Gallacher, director of energy at Consumer Focus, who said it is good news that individuals will have certainty about what they can expect to receive from the technology.

She added: "The government has to balance providing enough incentives for people to take-up renewable energy with limiting the cost and impact that is passed on to bill-payers."

It is therefore right to end high subsidies for the industry, as this will cut costs for the majority of energy users who fund them through higher bills, as well as pressuring firms to reduce installation expenses, Ms Gallacher stated.
