The Department of Energy and Climate Change has highlighted the benefits the roll-out of smart meters will provide to domestic energy users in the UK, which should enable them to get cheap electricity.
In a letter to the Daily Mail, energy minister Charles Hendry stated the technology will allow individuals greater security by ending estimated billing.
He added: "Smart meters will give more control over how we use energy at home and work, helping us cut waste and save money."
Mr Hendry also noted the government will carefully study a report by the Public Accounts Committee into the devices, which warned many vulnerable users could miss out on savings unless safeguards are put in place.
However, the minister claimed smart meters will allow providers to work more efficiently, which will result in fewer costs to the end user.
