Energy firms 'must face legislation' - 27/04/2012

An MP has called on the government to bring forward legislation that will make it a legal requirement for energy suppliers to offer their cheapest deals to elderly customers.

Tom Greatrex, representative for Rutherglen and Hamilton West, was quoted by the Rutherglen Reformer as saying such proposals would help nearly 7,000 of his constituents save up to £200 a year on fuel bills.

He added the current number of tariffs on the market - which stands at around 400 - is too confusing for many people.

Therefore, he said: "It's no surprise that 80 per cent of people in my constituency are paying over the odds for their electricity and gas bills."

He added this "rip-off" must end by ensuring energy suppliers are required to offer over-75s their cheapest tariffs.

Earlier this month, the government unveiled a new scheme that will see providers write to their customers on an annual basis advising them if there are better options available.
