Wind farm job creation could appeal to customers comparing energy companies - 06/04/2009

People deciding whether to switch energy companies could be swayed by news that wind farm development could create thousands of new jobs.

Mike O'Brien, the energy minister, said that many jobs could be created by ports and investors which get involved in supplying the labour and raw materials needed to establish new wind farms.

He went on to say that the UK is keen to become the biggest investor in offshore wind projects in the world.

Addressing a meeting between the Department of Energy and Climate Change and a range of business and individuals connected to wind farm development, Mr O'Brien said: "Britain's ports could become the hub of activity and economic opportunity as we massively increase the amount of renewable energy we get from our seas - and could be key to constructing and transporting wind technology."

Building more wind farms throughout the UK could result in cheaper energy prices while also contributing to a reduced national carbon footprint.

Corporate commitment to wind technology has been thrown into doubt recently as the recession has made the significant investment necessary for wind farm development much riskier.
