Energy suppliers join 10:10 campaign - 03/09/2009

Several of the UK's major energy companies have joined a new campaign dubbed 10:10 that could encourage more people to compare energy prices.

The scheme is encouraging businesses and homes throughout the UK to reduce their energy consumption by ten per cent by 2010, potentially reducing bills in the process and lowering the national carbon footprint.

Filmmaker Franny Armstrong initiated the campaign in the wake of her environmental awareness film The Age of Stupid being released in cinemas and the scheme has attracted considerable celebrity support.

Ms Armstrong told the Telegraph: "10:10 aims to enlist every person, every school, every business, every hospital in the country to commit to cut their own emissions by ten per cent next year and then, crucially, demand that the government follows suit."

The campaign has the support of Centrica, Scottish and Southern, EDF and E.On and could convince homeowners to switch gas and electricity suppliers for greener alternatives.

Small acts, such as making sure television sets are not left on standby overnight, can help reduce carbon emissions and lower electricity bills.
