Primary school to generate own cheap electricity - 02/02/2011

Pupils in a Cornish school are learning about cheap energy generation through the use of solar panels.

According to the Western Morning News, children at Wadebridge Primary School will benefit from the photovoltaic cells installed on the school's roof, which will be able to provide a significant amount of the building's cheap electricity requirements.

Any spare power that is not used by the school can be exported to the National Grid for payment.

Headteacher Geoff Leend told the newspaper: "Pupils will be able to monitor the production of electricity via a special screen and they will be able to see just how much impact the installation will have on the school's carbon footprint."

He noted that the solar panel system will generate the equivalent amount of energy that is used by three average homes throughout a year.

"With a minimum guaranteed life expectancy of 25 years this amounts to a staggering 112,475 kg saving for our school alone," he added.
