Homecall+

HomeCall+ was one of the UK’s leading companies specialising in insurance products for home emergencies - plumbing problems, drainage and electrical failures: the everyday disasters which are simply not covered by usual insurance policies.

Their cover includes:

•    Cover for breakdown or failure of your central heating system with repair costs up to £500 per claim (including VAT) - available on boilers up to 10 years old.
•    Cover against internal plumbing emergencies up to £500 per claim and for external drains and sewers up to £500 per claim (including VAT)
•    Cover for electrical wiring up to a total of £500 per claim (including VAT)
•    Cover for Vermin such as rats, mice, or wasps nests
•    Cover for Broken or damaged windows and doors presenting a security risk to the Property
•    Cover for Hot water failure
•    24 hour, 365 days a year Emergency Hotline.

On 19th May 2011 Homecall+ went into compulsory liquidation, leaving thousands of customers worried about their boiler cover. Repairing a boiler or heating system costs on average £574, which is a huge blow when coupled with soaring energy bills.

The company based in Blackburn was put into liquidation by the Official Receiver in Blackpool after financial collapse.

Until December 2010, the service was provided by Brit Insurance Limited, who had a 24hr 365 day a year call centre to handle any household emergency and a network of thousands of qualified tradesmen on call all year round. It was underwritten by Europ Assistance Insurance Ltd.

Brit Insurance have said that they will continue to honour policies taken out before 3rd December 2010. Other customers may not be so lucky. Customers may also be able to claim compensation from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, as the company was FSA approved.
