Pensioners looking to switch energy companies could open new account - 01/09/2009

Pensioners trying to reduce the impact of price rises from energy suppliers could be interested in news that Leeds Building Society is offering them a special new account.

The Winter Fuel Saver account incentivises pensioners by providing a 5.12 per cent interest rate to customers over the age of 60 until February 28th 2010, after which the rate will come down to 0.25 per cent.

Pensioners could find the extra interest they earn before the end of February could be put towards paying their winter energy bills, while they could also switch gas and electricity suppliers.

Kim Rebecchi, Leeds director of sales and marketing, said: "We have designed this unique product to pay an excellent guaranteed return in a way that helps savers, delivering an upfront return at a time when bills are at their highest."

Many pensioners suffer from fuel poverty and the government provides winter fuel payments of up to £250 to help households cope with winter temperatures.

Energy companies were criticised earlier this year for only reducing prices after a cold snap swept the UK in February.
